Avatar: The Way of Water
7.1/10
The film is confusing.
It relies very much on The visual and some could say on audio the use of HFR (High Refresh Rate) was for me a cool move on Cameron since for me it brought life to the film but maybe made the brawls a little sloppier.
For me, this film was looking at that visually stunning creature or tree or splash of water.
The story is weird, it d9oesnt know where to begin, it quickly cuts off from the main characters, the whole messiah of the Navi in an unnatural way just to take us to the ocean tribes and it goes like a typical situation where kids wanna go home and cannot fit in and the new kids pick on them for being different which felt overused and mundane, The return of Sigourney Weaver felt subtle but maybe unorthodox in the new character as Kiri but the return of the Coronel was for me a miss, instead of expanding on the ethics of soul, brain, cloning and the who am I, it just is a return of the actor for the sake of it.
The return of the sky people felt anti-climatic and just went downhill, no subplot of the new arrival on Pandora, no clear objective but some loose phrases and to end up fighting in a fishing boat.
The Story was for me predictable, early I guessed a Brother of the Sully family would die, and seeing how the eldest had zero screen time and how the other was having a whale friend arc, all I knew was the eldest would die.
For me, the best thing was Spider, from the trailers stuck with me the concept of a human child growing up in Pandora to be just like them with his mask was such a good idea but felt weird when he spent all the time just being a captive and the fact that he was the offspring of the late Coronel was maybe too much.
But as a whole, I think James thought of the first movie as a stand-alone film and it felt that way when the idea of being a saga came maybe he knew some radical changes had to be done and maybe that is why the sudden change of characters and location and also this film being the heavy lifting and the setting for the future movies.
My guess is that since the new plan was for a continuous series of films, this sequel had to redo a lot of aspects and carry the heavy lifting of introducing characters that will be of importance in upcoming movies but it failed on giving context, lore and a more stable understanding of what the sky demons are doing now because also the new substance that earth wants suddenly change to a cure of aging that the whales of Pandora have in their brains.
3D Experience
The 3D was cool but I have to admit I did not like it as much as I did with other movies including Avatar (2009) but still (the depth was indeed part of the storytelling), Maybe it was because the projector was not good enough in the cinema I had to go but the blacks were crushed and the overall image looked like shaded and somewhat dull and it was a shame because the sunrays looked out of this world and I thought to myself that this movie in HDR Dolby Vision would be a whole new experience as well with more vivid colors and more life-like contrast.
My theory also is that since my only experience with 3D was with VR, it predisposed me to a different 3D and to my perspective a superior one since there is no polarization thus no brightness or color saturation loss and no dizziness that #D glasses made me feel.
